Finding My Way

Right out of high school, I did not know where my life was heading. What path should I choose? I was so unsure of the route I wanted to take that would eventually lead me into my lifelong career. I spent the first couple years of college focusing solely on my general studies. As time went by, I found myself so focused on school that I had not made time to create art and, ultimately, the creative spark and inspiration I once had was gone. I was so lost. I decided I needed some time to think about my future and long term goals. So, I moved to Hawaii.

Hawaii is such a fun and colorful place, inspiration was all around me. From the artwork locals made, the music blaring from the bass systems in their rusty cars, to the beautiful sunsets every evening. It was everything I needed to find my creative spark again.

When I had returned to college I was enrolled as an Elementary Education major, but as the semester passed I had this unsettling feeling that this path was not right for me. I thought back to Hawaii and the inspiration it had brought to me. It was at this moment that I realized I needed to become an artist. Shortly after, I decided to venture into the art building to check out the program for myself.

Upon entering the building and exploring each level, a feeling of belonging overwhelmed me, and I had wondered why it took so long for me to discover it. As I made my way downstairs, my last destination was the main office, to where I switched my major for the last time.

Currently I am wrapping up my third semester in the art department and I find that the artists that surround me have a certain aesthetic to their work. I have often questioned why I have not found my own aesthetic, but have come to discover it is because I am still finding my way.

As I progress through the art program, each class offers a unique set of skills and techniques that requires that I reach out of my comfort zone. Sometimes I do not get techniques right away, others I pick up immediately. These are the moments I live for; finding what works and what does not. The art program here at Weber State continues to inspire and help me to discover what my aesthetic is and who I am as an artist.

Throughout my portfolio you will discover that my aesthetic is still not quite yet perfected, but I do not see this as a negative aspect. I believe it is good to be versatile due to the fact that I can reach out to many different clients and audiences with great success.
